A stunning eclipse of the sun, a moon race, and other space events in 2024
The year 2024 is expected to be a significant year for space exploration. Several significant events are projected to occur, including a solar eclipse that is stunning, a new moon's race, and the return of humans to the moon.
The most anticipated solar eclipse of the year is scheduled for total solar eclipse that will cover the entire north American continent on April 8th. The eclipse will start in Mexico, then spread across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. It will end in New York and then move to New Hampshire and Maine. It will also be observed in Nova Scotia. The total eclipse will last for up to 2 minutes and 40 seconds in specific locations, this will make it the longest total solar eclipse that can be seen from the U.S. mainland in over a century.
The eclipse will be an uncommon opportunity for people in North America to observe the corona of the sun, the outermost layer of its atmosphere. The corona is typically concealed by the sunlight's bright disk, but during a total solar eclipse, it is perceptible as a faint, glowing halo.
Other than the solar eclipse, 2024 will also see the beginning of a new moon's race. China and the U.S. are both expected to send astronauts to the moon in the near future. China intends to execute its first manned lunar mission, Chang'e 6, by 2024. Also, the U.S. intends to reenter the moon as part of its Artemis initiative. The first mission dedicated to Artemis is scheduled to be released in 2022.
Other planned space activities for the year 2024 include:
- The debut of the James Webb Telescope, which is the most powerful telescope created. The telescope is expected to be released in December of 2021.
- The landing of the first official crew on the International Space Station. SpaceX is expected to release its first crewed mission to the ISS in 2024.
- The debut of the European Space Agency's Rosalind Franklin rover, which will land on Mars in the future.
2024 is expected to be a significant year for space exploration. With numerous significant events scheduled, it's likely that this year will fascinate people worldwide.
