Amazon connects Kuiper satellites with laser link to strengthen space internet network
Amazon has successfully tested a laser link between two Kuiper satellites, a major milestone in the company's plans to build a global internet from space.
Laser links, also known as optical inter-satellite links (OISL), enable satellites to communicate with each other at speeds of up to 100 gigabits per second. This is much faster than traditional wireless connections, which can only transfer data at 2 gigabytes per second.
The use of OISL will enable Kuiper to provide faster, more reliable internet services to customers in remote and underserved areas. It will also help reduce latency, which is the time it takes for data to travel from one point to another.
Amazon isn’t the only company working on OISL for space-based internet. SpaceX is also developing OISL for its Starlink network, and OneWeb plans to use OISL for its satellite constellation.
